Ridge Merino recently expanded their men’s and women’s apparel to include a line of kids merino wool base layers. Founded in 2014 by a husband and wife team, Jeff and Susan Russell, and based in Mammoth Lakes, CA their mission is to produce high quality merino wool apparel that can withstand daily life as well as extreme outdoor conditions. Their clothing is made to be simple and comfortable while selling at lower prices than comparable high-end merino wool clothing because they sell directly to the consumer. They are committed to operating in a responsible and ethical manner and only work with partners that share those values. Their wool is sustainably sourced from certified-humane farmers in Australia and New Zealand and the Russells have personally visited their manufacturers to ensure that they operate at the highest standard. Also, as a member of 1% For the Planet, every Ridge purchase gives back to environmental nonprofits.

FIT: The base layer set runs quite small. My son is wearing the x-small (5-6) and it fits him without much extra growing room. He is bigger for his age but I would recommend sizing up. The top especially has a very trim fit. It has a nice length in the torso but the sleeves are more tight and it took a little effort to get his hands through. The thumb holes in the cuffs provide ample coverage of the wrist and hand when in use.
COMFORT: Crafted from 190g merino wool, the base layer set is soft and thin, perfect for layering and for sleeping. The flat locked seams are itch free and like the adult garments there is a printed neck label.
DURABILITY: The quality of the Ridge Merino clothing did not decrease in the kids line even though the sizes did. Based on how the men’s merino has worn I would expect the same result from the kids merino. (see Ridge Merino Men’s Review)
EASE OF CARE: Ridge merino wool garments are extremely easy to care for. They are machine washable with normal detergent and can be tumbled dry low with like garments. Line drying is recommended to preserve the longevity and merino does dry very quickly. I hand washed and noticed that although the colors were dark they hardly bled. I also did not notice any pilling on the merino, only a slight temporary fuzziness.
CONCLUSION:
- High quality 100% merino wool base layer set
- Runs small with a trim fit
- Minimal pilling
- Every purchase is backed by the Ridge Guarantee. If you are not 100% satisfied with your Ridge product, send it back for a repair, replacement or refund. (normal wear and tear is excluded) They also provide a complete warranty against manufacturing and material defects for their lifetime.
