Nui Organics Merino/Silk Pajama Review

What are the benefits of adding silk to merino wool? Silk is soft and smooth, antimicrobial, and an effective insulator. It shares many of the same benefits of wool — moisture wicking, temperature regulating and breathable. It is ideal for those with sensitive skin or eczema and adds strength and lustre to the garment. Silk is also grown without pesticides. The Nui Organics merino/silk pajamas are a blend of 70% GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards) organic merino wool and 30% mulberry silk. It is completely free of harsh chemicals normally found in wool that can contribute to a wool sensitivity in some people. Often machine washable wool is treated with chlorine, which creates a toxic wastewater, however, Nui uses a GOTS approved plasma treatment which is safer for the wearer and the environment. The garments are manufactured in Lithuania by a factory committed to social and environmental welfare and sustainability.

Nui Organics Merino/Silk Pajama Review

Founded in 2004 by Amanda (before becoming a mother) from a need to make a living creating something good. In her own words ‘something safe and natural that would cause no harm while still being a quality, affordable, sustainable alternative to synthetic, non-sustainable options.’ Born in New Zealand, a lover of wool, and a background in design are a few elements from which Nui was born.

In case you are curious as to how the company got its name, ‘In Maori, the native language of New Zealand, nui means big or important hence the name Nui Organics™. Because we believe a clean start is a big thing for a little person.  We are inspired by our beautiful natural landscape and fired with a desire to maintain it for future generations.’

I received the merino/silk pajama sets in exchange for my full and unbiased review, however all opinions are my own. This post may include some affiliate links for your convenience, click here to read my full disclosure policy)

Nui Organics Merino/Silk Pajama Review

FIT: The merino/silk pajama sets run fairly true to size and the rib knit design allows for plenty of stretch. I sized up for my son so that I could get at least 2 years wear from them. My daughter is wearing the size for her age and it is a little more form fitting up top while still having ample room for her cloth diapered bottom. The shorts have a relaxed, baggy design. My son is wearing the shimmer color and my daughter is wearing dusk.  Nui offers a sleeveless, short sleeve and tank body style in four beautiful colors.

COMFORT: The merino/silk blend is extremely lightweight, perfect for sleeping on warmer summer nights. Before getting this set my son would complain that he was too warm in his other merino short sets and would take them off. He has not taken these off at night or complained about being too warm since receiving them, which is the only proof I need of their comfort. The label is printed directly on the garment for children who may be sensitive to tags. The vests are wonderful by themselves in the summer but can also be used in cooler weather as a tank underneath long sleeve shirts.

DURABILITY: My son has worn these every night for sleeping only since we received them. My daughter has worn her tops outside under overalls or for sleeping.  I have not seen any sign of wear on either set. These sets are designed for sleeping or light use, which should be taken into consideration.

EASE OF CARE: The merino/silk pajama sets are machine washable and can be tumbled dry on low heat. I have only hand washed and air dried. Also, there has been no pilling with the wear they have gotten.

CONCLUSION: Nui Organics has a long standing reputation of producing quality wool and cotton garments. Using quality material with a commitment to ethical sourcing, manufacturing processes, and environmental impact the garments feel good in every way. My daughter has also been wearing a couple organic cotton rompers this summer and they have held up very well to the wear/machine washing that they have received. The cotton line tends to run big so there is no need to size up.

Nui Organics merino, merino/silk, and organic cotton garments can be purchased on their site or on Amazon.
